Live updates as fire shuts part of busy road near city centre

A main road in Newport is closed in both directions due to a police incident. It is understood that a van is on fire on the A48 near the M4 junction 28. The road is affected from Tredegar Park to B4237 Cardiff Road, Ebbw Bridge roundabout.

Emergency services including firefighters and paramedics are said to be at the scene of the incident which happened at around 2pm on Monday, October 23.

Gwent Police said the A48 Cardiff Road, Newport is currently closed between Tredegar Park roundabout and Statistics Office both directions. Diversions are in place which may cause congestion and they are asking people to avoid the area if possible and find alternative routes.
