Live updates as farmers hold tractor protest ahead of Keir Starmer appearance

Farmers are protesting in Llandudno ahead of a speech by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He is speaking in Llandudno at the Welsh Labour conference this morning.

Earlier this year, his predecessor Rishi Sunak was greeted by the sight of tractors lining up outside the same venue when he spoke at the Welsh Conservative conference. That protest was over the sustainable farming scheme, a financial package of support for farmers post-Brexit. The latest row comes after Labour chancellor Rachel Reeves announced in the Budget that the rules around inheritance tax for farms would change.

The Treasury say that a very small number of farms in Wales would be impacted, but that is disputed by farmers and their unions who say the nature of farming in Wales means it would be catastrophic for the industry. Wales' First Minister Eluned Morgan has told the Senedd a "very very small" number of Welsh farms will be impacted, but when asked the Welsh Government could not provide figures, and referred our question to the Treasury which said it did not have any figures for Wales.

We spoke to a number of farmers in Wales after the announcement, who shared the impact they believe the scheme will have on them. You can see their stories here.

During a visit to Airbus' factory in Broughton on Friday, the Prime Minister referenced the row, repeating that the number of farms impacted would be small. He said he understood there was anxiety but it was his government's job to explain the rule change to farmers. Join our WhatsApp news community here for the latest breaking news.
