Live updates as Eluned Morgan is announced as Welsh Labour leader

Eluned Morgan has been named the leader of Welsh Labour. She is now likely to be named the next First Minister of Wales and will be the first woman to hold the role.

When Vaughan Gething announced he was standing down, Welsh Labour set out a timetable for what was widely expected to be a leadership contest. Only Senedd members can hold the role and to get their names on the ballot, they had to secure nominations from their colleagues.

Anyone with more than five MS nominations, or through a slightly more complicated system of getting union nominations, can be on the ballot. However, Mrs Morgan has had support of almost all the 30 MSs in the Labour group and no-one else put their name forward by the deadline of noon on July 24. Only the current First Minister Vaughan Gething, Lee Waters and Hannah Blythyn did not nominate anyone. Ms Morgan was therefore elected unopposed.

The date of the vote for First Minister, which it is widely expected she will win, is yet to be determined and is triggered by Mr Gething formally resigning.

In a statement ahead of a celebration event in Cardiff, she said: "I am truly honoured to become the first woman to lead Welsh Labour and to be put forward as our party’s nominee to become the next First Minister of Wales.

"At this pivotal time for our country, strength, stability, and unity will be my guiding principles. I want to ensure that everyone in Wales has the opportunity and ability to fulfil their potential.

"Huw Irranca-Davies and I stood proudly as a partnership, and we are delighted to have received the overwhelming support of Welsh Labour MS’ and support from across Wales and the wider Labour movement.
