LIVE: Trains STOPPED on major route after 'emergency incident' - latest updates

All trains have been stopped on a major route while emergency services respond to an incident. National Rail says all lines between Newton-le-Willows and Eccles are currently closed.

Emergency services are reportedly working at the scene. Train services between Manchester Airport and Liverpool Lime Street have been cancelled or delayed due to the incident, according to Northern.

A National Rail spokesperson said: "The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Newton-le-Willows and Eccles. To allow them to safely carry out their work, all lines between these stations are closed.

"Trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes, revised or diverted."

Disruption is expected to last until around 8.30pm. Further details on the nature of the incident are yet to be confirmed. Emergency services have been approached for more information.
