LIVE: Manchester services hit after train derails causing UK travel chaos - latest updates

Manchester train services have been hit after a train derailment caused travel chaos this afternoon.

A train which derailed in the Milton Keynes area today has closed a number of lines, with major disruption expected until the end of the day.

Avanti West Coast services between London Euston and major UK stations, including Birmingham New Street, Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street have been affected.

Passengers have been warned that trains may be cancelled or delayed by 90 minutes as crews respond to the incident.

There's been delays to West Midlands Railway services from London Euston to Tring this afternoon, which is having knock-on effects on the network further north.

'Major problems' have been reported on trains to Coventry via Birmingham International, according to the train operator's website.

If your train is cancelled, your ticket will be accepted on the two Avanti West Coast services either before or after your booked train. Alternatively, tickets are being accepted on various routes with the following operators:

- Between London Marylebone and Birmingham Moor Street with Chiltern Railways.
- Between Reading and Edinburgh Waverley with CrossCountry.
- Between London St Pancras and Sheffield/Derby and between Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly/Liverpool Lime Street with East Midlands Railway.
- Between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh with LNER.
- Between Preston and Glasgow
