LIVE Manchester city centre brought to standstill as Metrolink tram crashes - updates

People are being warned to expect major disruption in Manchester city centre following a crash involving a tram.

Streets are being closed around St Peter's Square following a collision between a Metrolink tram and another vehicle on Mosley Street this morning (February 22).

Officers are warning that a 'lengthy closure' will follow the crash, with disruption set affect passengers and pedestrians.

A GMP Traffic spokesperson wrote on X: "Our officers are currently in attendance at a collision, involving a tram and another vehicle in Manchester city centre.

"We are presently trying to establish the circumstances however we envisage there will be a lengthy closure of surrounding streets near to St Peters Square."

An update from the Inrix traffic monitoring service said: "Mosley Street in both directions partially blocked, slow traffic due to accident, tram and car involved from Charlotte Street to Nicholas Street."

Further details about the nature of the collision are yet to be confirmed.

A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson said:

"Due to a road traffic collision on Mosley Street in the city centre, no tram services are operating between St Peter's Square and Piccadilly Gardens.

"As a result, there are several service changes in place.

"Services will operate as follows: Manchester Airport and Bury to Altrincham services will travel via via 2cc [Exchange
