LIVE: Major M6 delays after motorway shut following 'vehicle fire' - updates

All traffic has been held on a Greater Manchester motorway this afternoon following reports of a 'vehicle fire'.

Queues are building on the M6 near Wigan after an incident on the M58 Eastbound from J5 A577 Prescott Road (Up Holland) to M6 J26 (Orrell Interchange).

Traffic is currently stationary as emergency services race to the scene. It is currently unclear whether anyone has been injured.

All delays have eased on the M58 this evening. All lanes have now been reopened.

Delays remain in the area but are now easing, with expected travel time at around 15 minutes on the M58 Eastbound.

Travel time remains at around 40 minutes on the M58 Eastbound between J5 and Orrell Interchange.

One lane of the M58 Eastbound remains closed this evening as accident investigation work gets underway.

Long delays remain in the area.

At 15:30 on the 30th April 2024, two fire engines from Skelmersdale and Wigan (from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service) attended a vehicle fire on the M58 East.

Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera and cutting tools to extinguish the fire. Crews remain in attendance.

Delays of 40 minutes are now being reported on the M58 Eastbound.

One lane has reopened on the M58 Eastbound. One lane remains closed, and traffic is still stationary in the area.
