LIVE: M6 traffic delays with lanes shut after car fire - latest updates

Queues are building on a stretch of the M6 this morning after a vehicle fire.

Two lanes have been shut off on the southbound carriageway at junction 21 for Woolston. According to traffic alert service Inrix, congestion is currently back to the junction 22 on the southbound carriageway and junction 20 for the M56 on the northbound carriageway.

Drivers have been urged to allow extra time for journeys. Delays are building as emergency services respond to the incident.

A tweet posted by National Highways said: "2 (of 4) lanes are closed on the #M6 southbound between J21 and J20 due to a vehicle fire. There are delays of 20 minutes above normal travel times.

"Please allow extra time for your journey. Thank you for your patience."

North West Motorway Police said: "We currently have a lane 1 and 2 closure on the M6 southbound between junction 21 and 20 due to car fire, all occupants safe and secure, Fire crew in attendance."
