LIVE: M6 closed with miles of congestion following 'serious accident' - updates

Drivers are facing long delays on the M6 near Wigan this morning following a 'serious accident'.

Emergency services have rushed to the M6 northbound from J26 M58 ( Orrell Interchange) to J27 A5209 Crow Orchard Road (Standish) following what is understood to be a serious crash.

The M6 northbound is currently blocked, with approximately three miles of congestion.

Traffic is being diverted via the M6 Northbound at J26 /M58 roundabouts and taking the second exit off the first roundabout.

Despite an earlier clearance the M6 northbound is now closed again due to accident investigation work from J26 M58 (Orrell Interchange) to J27 A5209 Crow Orchard Road (Standish).

All lanes have now been reopened but significant delays remain.

Huge queues are forming on the M6 northbound with drivers facing 45 minute delays.

There are diversion routes in operation.
