Three fire engines, paramedics and police were dispatched to the property just before 7.30am. A number of residents in adjacent properties were evacuated while firefighters tackled the blaze.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police later confirmed an 'elderly male' had died in the fire. This morning police forensic experts were at the scene as an investigation into the death was launched.

A file is expected to be prepared for the coroner. It is understood the deceased male was aged 70.
