LIVE: Latest updates from Luke Brooks inquest as coroner gives conclusion

The inquest into 27-year-old Luke Brooks' death concludes at Rochdale Coroners' Court today. Coroner Joanne Kearsley has heard three days of evidence on the circumstances surrounding his death this week.

Mr Brooks died last October 25 after falling ill at his family's home on Huxley Street, Oldham, which they rented privately. The inquest heard how Mr Brooks' family reported incidents of disrepair, damp and mould in the years they lived at the house.

Council officers knew about mould at the home for years before Mr Brooks' death, the court has heard, but the inspector who visited the property days later insisted there was 'nothing significant'.

A pathologist has linked Mr Brooks' death to the aspergillus mould, and had initially linked it to Mr Brooks' accommodation. However, mycology expert Prof Malcolm Richardson said the type of mould linked to Mr Brooks' death - aspergillus - did not commonly grow on building materials.

Dr Chris Kosmidis, a specialist in infectious diseases, said 'no single factor can be confirmed' as the course of Mr Brooks' aspergillus pneumonia. He suggested a possible link to influenza, which Mr Brooks suffered symptoms of in the days leading up to his death, but was not tested for at post-mortem.

Ms Kearsley heard legal submissions from barristers representing the family, Oldham Council and North West Ambulance Service yesterday (August 9). She is expected to give her conclusion from 2pm this afternoon.

Describing her son in court this week, Patricia Brooks told the coroner: "He was funny, witty, intelligent, clever. There’s nothing bad I can say about my Luke."
