LIVE: East Lancs Road closed with major emergency response and air ambulance scrambled - updates

Part of the East Lancashire Road (A580) is closed off this afternoon following a major collision. Police, fire crews and paramedics are at the scene currently near to Chaddock Lane, in the Astley area.

An air ambulance has also been scrambled to the scene and has landed nearby. Multiple emergency vehicles are at the scene with a screen also erected around a vehicle.

The East Lancashire Road and nearby Chaddock Lane have now reopened following the earlier collision.

Greater Manchester Police have urged motorists to 'avoid the area' this evening as they continue to respond to the serious collision.

A spokesperson said in a statement: "We are responding to a serious three-vehicle road traffic collision on Chaddock Lane in Worsley tonight.

"The East Lancashire Road has been closed heading into Manchester. Please avoid the area and plan routes accordingly."

A driver has been rushed to hospital following a 'serious' crash beside the East Lancs Road earlier today, the M.E.N understands.

It is understood they have sustained life threatening injuires.

The crash involving three vehicles was reported on Chaddock Lane in the Worsley area, Greater Manchester Police confirmed.
