LIVE: Constance Marten and Mark Gordon updates as missing baby search continues

An urgent search for the baby of aristocrat Constance Marten and her partner Mark Gordon is continuing amid police fears the child may have come to harm.

The pair were further arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter on Tuesday after being stopped in Brighton on Monday following several weeks of avoiding the police, but the baby was not with them. A member of the public, who had seen media reports about the couple, phoned 999 after seeing them withdraw cash from a convenience store in Hollingbury Place shortly before 9.30pm.

Since then, more than 200 officers have been searching an area of seven miles by 13 miles for the baby, from where the couple were last sighted to where they were arrested – including allotments and woodland. Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford said police still hoped to find the child safe.

However, confirming Marten and Gordon had been re-arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter, Mr Basford said police had to consider the possibility the baby had “come to harm”. The infant has not been seen by a doctor since birth in early January.

Authorities believe the couple had previously been sleeping rough in a blue tent. Marten and Gordon had previously avoided police by moving around the country in taxis, paying for everything in cash and covering their faces when on CCTV.

An investigation was first launched by Greater Manchester Police after the couple’s car was found on fire and abandoned on the hard shoulder of the M61 in Bolton.
