Live Birmingham Airport updates as huge queue forms outside

Hundreds of people in the security queue at Birmingham Airport are queuing out of the front entrance on Friday, leaving holidaymakers furious. Passengers flying from the airport that is popular with Welsh travellers have been venting their frustrations on social media.

Some claimed they had arrived at the airport extra early to make sure they boarded their flight in time - but were still hit with huge delays. The massive queue snaked from outside the building and along check-in areas before even reaching security.

The airport is currently carrying out building works to build a "more streamlined" security area. The airport's main escalators are out of service and holidaymakers are forced to use lifts.

A Birmingham Airport spokesperson has said: "Due to our on-going constructions works to build our new security search area, customers will find themselves queuing in unfamiliar areas. With the sunny morning we experienced today, we took the decision to queue our customers outside to ease congestion around the construction works.

"Whilst this looks unusual to our customers, and for this we apologise, we do make operational decisions daily to ensure the flow of customers through security.”
