An expert has shared a 'little-known' trick that will make your grass grow 'thick and healthy' by summer. Many people don't like cutting the grass and will do anything to avoid it - but a gardening expert has warned about common mistakes homeowners make when mowing their lawns.

Brits spend about 15 hours a year cutting their grass, according to research, but gardening guru Bo Petterson says all this hard work could be going to waste.

Bo, a dad-of-six, who posts on TikTok as @dadadvicefrombo, shared his four best tips for a great-looking lawn, and emphasised how and when you cut your grass 'really matters', reports the Mirror.

Bo said in one video: "In the spring, you need to mow a couple of times a week and you need to cut it short. That teaches your grass that it can't go up so it has to go out, giving you a thicker lawn.

"In the summertime, you don't have to cut it as often but you want to leave it longer because it provides shade for the roots from the hot sun."

Bo also said to change the way you mow each time. You could mow up and down, side to side, in a cross pattern or waves. He warns that if you don't change it up, your grass might grow sideways like a combover. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) agrees with Bo's advice and says it stops ruts in the lawn.

The gardener explained that if the ends of your grass are ripped, it means your lawn mower blades might be blunt. "You need to sharpen them or change your blades," he advised.

It's a good idea to sharpen or replace your mower blades about once every year. Bo also said: "Inspect your grass every few months to look for ripped cuts, that will tell you it's time."
