Life in the 'picturesque' Greater Manchester village with a 'buzzing' bar scene and hipster vibe

A Greater Manchester village nestled in the South Pennines and the Peak District has become a hit with drinkers thanks to a new-found hipster vibe.

It was once part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, but Uppermill is now firmly part of the civil parish of Saddleworth in the borough of Oldham.

It made its name from wool and cotton spinning during the Industrial Revolution. Yet it now has a distinctly modern feel. There has been investment and on the high street there are swish bars and eateries and aplenty.

The main street has a buzz about it on a summer's day thanks to an influx of visitors and some cool pubs, restaurants, bars and cafes. Most of the charity shops seem to have faded away reports Yorkshire Live.

Uppermill has undergone a property boom and the inward investment is clear to see, with few To Let signs or obvious examples of dereliction.

New arrivals are enticed by the fabulous scenery as there is a river, a canal and stunning landscapes, particularly at nearby Dovestones where there is a sailing and a circular walk around a huge reservoir. Dovestones itself feels a bit like a mini Lake District and can get busy at the weekend.

If you fancy a few drinks, or even a little pub/bar crawl, there is a great selection, from traditional boozers to swanky cafes serving food with your drinks.

No, not Karl Marx's old haunt, but The Commercial, AKA The Commie. Camra (Campaign for Real Ale) calls it a family friendly pub welcoming everyone from students to pensioners. There are hand-pulled beers and, outside, some tables to sit and watch
