Lidl court battle forces Tesco to make one major change in every supermarket

Following a lengthy court battle over copyright rules, the UK's largest supermarket chain Tesco has been forced to change the design of some of its branding after it was found to look too similar to that of bargain competitor Lidl.

Shoppers will soon notice this change in store, with Tesco's familiar "Clubcard prices" label, a yellow circle on a blue background, being replaced on every shelf and sign. After losing an appeal in the High Court last month, Tesco has until May 21 to roll out the change in all of its stores.

The supermarket has teased the design of its new Clubcard logo on its Tesco app ahead of it being implemented in every one of its 4673 stores nationwide. Its new logo to draw in bargain hunters will look familiar, now a blue rectangle with the words "Clubcard Price" next to a yellow sticker with the reduced price on it.

This major change across all Tesco stores is a result of a High Court ruling that found Tesco to have taken "unfair advantage" of the Lidl logo's association with "great value". Tesco said it was "disappointed" with the ruling in the case, which began in 2020 soon after they implemented the new logo.

At the time of the judgement, Tesco said: ""We are disappointed with the judgement relating to the colour and shape of the Clubcard Prices logo but would like to reassure customers that it will in no way impact our Clubcard Prices programme.

"Clubcard Prices, irrespective of its logo, will continue to play a central role in rewarding our Clubcard members with thousands of deals every week."
