Lewis Wing opens up on his disappointing Sheffield Wednesday loan spell

Lewis Wing believes a “loss of confidence” was the primary reason for his disappointing loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday.

The 27-year-old spent the first half of last season on-loan with the Owls from Middlesbrough but registered just one goal in 24 appearances across all competitions.

Wing had played 92 matches in the Championship for Middlesbrough but found himself surplus to requirements under Neil Warnock. He had rediscovered his confidence during a short-term loan at Rotherham at the end of the 2020-21 season before his confidence took a major blow in Teesside.

“I went to Rotherham and that helped me get my confidence back,” Wing revealed in an interview with Teesside Live. “But I could tell there wasn’t a place for me under Warnock and every player wants to play games ultimately."

He continued: “I went to Sheffield Wednesday but because of the circumstances I probably lost that confidence I’d gained at Rotherham again.

“I didn’t feel good about myself because I’d felt that summer I’d done everything I possibly could to stay at Middlesbrough and things just didn’t pan out that way. I struggled there and just wasn’t in a good place.”

Middlesbrough agreed to terminate his contract in January and Wing made a permanent switch to League One outfit Wycombe Wanderers. Although his season ended in play-off heartbreak, as they were defeated by Sunderland in the final, Wing has rediscovered his confidence at Adams Park.

“I sat down with the family in the January and said I need to find somewhere I’m going to be wanted. Luckily, I found Wycombe and my confidence came back,” Wing said.
