Sheffield Wednesday handed huge Will Vaulks fitness boost ahead of Rayo Vallecano test

Sheffield Wednesday fans could get to see Will Vaulks in action for the first time this week. The energetic midfielder is making good progress from a minor quad injury.

The knock has so far prevented Vaulks from playing any part in the club's pre-season friendly programme. But Darren Moore expects Vaulks to resume full training tomorrow and is hopeful the former Cardiff City man will be fully fit and available for selection come the start of the 2022/23 season.

Moore said: "He's back full training on Monday which is really, really good. We've got a game against Rayo Vallecano, we've got a game against Wigan and probably an in-house match. So that's probably still three matches we feel before the start of the season. We feel that is enough game time, match minutes and training volume to get in him before the start of the season.

After hosting La Liga side Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday evening, the Owls travel to Wigan Athletic on Saturday for their final pre-season outing. They begin their League One campaign at home to Portsmouth on July 30.

"We think that he will be fine (for Portsmouth)," said Moore. He's been doing a lot of work with the sports scientists on his own, so he's up and mobile. He's a real fit boy and we look forward to having him back with the group on Monday."
