Lewis Hamilton proved he was destined for the top of F1 with maiden victory in Monaco

Lewis Hamilton will be looking to try and challenge for good points this weekend in the Monaco Grand Prix, with the race playing host to one of his most famous victories back in 2008.

The 7-time world champion has an enviable catalogue of race wins to look back on but his best in Monaco perhaps came in just his second year in the sport – a campaign that would eventually see him win the world championship for the first time dramatically ahead of Felipe Massa.

Starting on a wet surface, the street track challenge had become even harder for the drivers back in 2008, and even Hamilton was caught out early on as he slid into the barriers just after the Tabac corner before the swimming pool section.

Indeed, he suffered a puncture from the impact and had to wrestle his McLaren back to the pitlane for a change of boots, which dropped him from second place down to fifth.

Usually in Monaco, such a moment will end up consigning you to a finish well away from the podium but Hamilton was not to be denied, with him instead pumping in hugely impressive lap times which, by the time those in front of him had made their scheduled pit-stops, would see him come out as leader of the pack.

The conditions were beginning to dry in Monaco by this point, too, and Hamilton got faster and faster, with him able to build a gap big enough to mean further pit-stops would not prevent him from losing P1.
