Lewis Hamilton made a mockery of Fernando Alonso's claims at Italian GP

Lewis Hamilton delivered a great recovery drive at the Italian Grand Prix at the weekend, starting in P19 due to engine penalties before manoeuvring his way through the field to secure fifth place in the race.

Max Verstappen was once again too quick for the rest of the field in his dominant Red Bull machinery, but Hamilton’s teammate, George Russell, finished third, so a podium was 100% on the cards for the Brit without the penalty.

A mechanical fault for Daniel Ricciardo meant the Australian had to pull up trackside in the dying laps, seeing the race finish behind the Safety Car with the rules followed on this occasion.

At Spa, Hamilton and Alonso came together on the opening lap, with the British driver taking a huge impact after his car went airborne, ending his race before it had even begun.

The Spaniard was fuming with his former teammate, jumping on the radio to say: “Yeah, what an idiot! Closing the door from the outside. I mean, we had a mega start but this guy only knows how to drive and start in first.”

He did later go on to apologise for his comments, with them coming in the heat of the moment after a collision in a race, so emotions were running high.

Hamilton has dominated the sport in recent years, so anyone who has watched Formula One will know that Alonso’s remarks were simply incorrect, with Hamilton showing his ability to carve his way through the pack on multiple occasions, famously at the Brazilian GP last year!

Hamilton had already offered a signed cap to Alonso as a joke at Zandvoort, with the pair clearly burying the hatchet and able to have a laugh about the situation.
