Leicester City suffer Wilfred Ndidi injury blow ahead of OH Leuven friendly

Wilfred Ndidi’s wait for a Leicester City run-out goes on after the midfielder twisted his ankle in training.

Ndidi has not played for City since March, when a 50-50 challenge against Rennes left him needing surgery on his knee. The recovery from the operation ruled him out for the final few months of last season, and while he returned to training with the rest of the group, he didn’t play against Notts County and now won’t feature against OH Leuven on Saturday.

City boss Brendan Rodgers has said that the Nigerian picked up the ankle injury in training at the club’s pre-season camp in Evian. Following a scan, it is hoped he will be able to return to training next week.

Another defensive midfielder, Hamza Choudhury, missed most of the work out in Evian, but did return for the final training session on Friday morning. He could play on Saturday.

“We’ve got one or two knocks,” Rodgers told LCFC TV. “Wilf’s twisted his ankle in training a few days ago. We don’t think it’s too serious.

“It’s a high ankle sprain, so he had a scan on it and it’ll hopefully be okay. We’ve just looked after him really, he won’t be involved at the weekend, but of course, hopefully next week at some point he’ll be back training.

“Hamza’s been out for a few days but he trained this [Friday] morning also. So that’s really good news.

“I’m really pleased now, having got a lot of our players back and seeing the level of fitness and actually seeing them perform in the training and exercises that they’ve managed so far. They’ve been really good.”

The match at Leuven will be 120 minutes in order to get more players time on the pitch, with Rodgers expecting his stars to play an hour. It should be a good test for them, with Leuven further into pre-season,
