Leeds want 53-goal sensation but £45m star could leave Elland Road

Leeds United got the job done and will remain in the Premier League next season. Boss Jesse Marsch is now ready for some deep assessment on this squad and finding the right characters to lead them away from further threat at the wrong end of the table. Depth is always a factor for clubs at the bottom of the Premier League but we also learned that the quality of this starting XI needs improving at Leeds. Their goals-for record was below average and their goals-against column was the second highest in the top-flight. This is a side that needs a few premium additions.

Now that they have survived, Leeds can assess properly how to remould this team.

New signing Brenden Aaronson was the long-term primary target and there will be links with other US-based players, with the name of New York City FC’s Valentin Castellanos one to keep an eye on. He’s a 23-year-old Argentine forward and already boasts 53 career goals for NYCFC.

Hoffenheim’s Florian Grillitsch is a target. The 6 foot 2 Austrian has the versatility to play in defence or midfield and fits the profile Marsch is looking for in terms of mentality and style. There have been suggestions that he will only arrive if Kalvin Phillips leaves, but that may not be the case.

Defender Oscar Mingueza has been linked but while he is not in Barcelona’s plans, it is also thought he would need convincing to join Leeds. Another centre-back linked is Chelsea’s Jake Clarke-Salter.

As an outside option, Takumi Minamino might yet emerge as a potential signing as he is expected to leave Liverpool. Marsch was his boss at RB Salzburg and would know how to exploit his talent.
