Leeds: 84 G/A South American would be ‘an exciting signing’ at Elland Road

Leeds United target Valentin Castellanos would ‘be an exciting signing’ this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The New York City FC striker has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs following an impressive two-and-a-half-year stint in Major League Soccer.

Manager Jesse Marsch has already been active in the current transfer window, bringing in Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen from former club Red Bull Salzburg.

And a new source of goals appears to be next on his wish list, with Junior Adamu, also of Salzburg, and Castellanos the latest names believed to be on the American tactician’s radar.

According to The Mirror, West Ham are leading the race for the 23-year-old’s signature, with the capital club prepared to match his £12.8 million price tag.

However, a recent report from 90min claimed that it’s actually Leeds who are the most interested in Castellanos after NYCFC’s sister club Manchester City turned down the opportunity to sign him.

It’s claimed that fellow Premier League sides Everton and Newcastle United are also monitoring the former Argentina Under-23 international’s situation in what could turn into an intriguing battle for his signature.

O’Rourke believes the South American would be an intriguing acquisition for Leeds yet would still represent ‘a bit of a gamble’ given the step-up in quality he would face.

“So, it’d be a bit of a step up for him, and it’d be interesting to see
