Lee Johnson's weird David Brent patter had Hibs fans fed up but I like the cut of Nick Montgomery's jib - Tam McManus

I can't deny I had doubts about handing Nick Montgomery the Hibs job. I’ve spent the last couple of weeks recommending it should have gone to Derek McInnes and I stand by my belief he’d have been a great choice for manager at Easter Road.

But having heard what my old Scotland Under-21 team-mate Monty has had to say for himself since being appointed this week, I’ve got to say I like the cut of his jib. It was interesting to hear him shy away from wanting to discuss his footballing philosophy and I must admit that doesn’t surprise me.

My memory of him from the couple of Scotland camps we were in together was that he was a pretty straight-forward, plain spoken Yorkshireman. As a player, he was a no-frills defensive midfielder and it just seems like he wants a team in his own image, full of guys prepared to work hard and keep to a tight system. And I think that will reassure the Hibs support.

By the end of Lee Johnson’s reign, they were fed up with all his attempts to sound clever when all he succeeded in was sounding like David Brent with his weird patter about sharks and lions chasing defenders. They saw through all the bluster and they saw through Lee Johnson too.

Now it's time for someone to cut the crap and do more than just talk a good game. Montgomery has certainly come across as a pretty impressive character.

He had an impressive track record in Australia. My only issue with him was his inexperience - he’s not yet got 60 games as a boss under his belt - and the fact he’ll never have worked in a setting as pressurised as Easter Road. His old Central Coast Mariners side are one of the smallest sides in the A-League with crowds of less than 7000.

He’ll have a lot more on his back if things don’t go well in Leith but now
