Lee Johnson lifts lid on THAT goal against Plymouth as Hibs boss names difference with Tillman Rangers controversy

One look from his old man in the dug out was enough to turn Lee Johnson back into an embarrassed school kid.

Even now, 19 years on, the Hibs manager looks a bit sheepish as he recalls the time as a midfielder at Yeovil - managed by his dad Gary - he found himself in the middle of an almighty storm in a south coast derby against Plymouth Argyle. The unofficial charge was unsporting conduct as he launched a ball into an unguarded Argyle net for the opening goal after the ball had been played out for an injury and with the furious opposition expecting possession to be returned.

His plea was not guilty - that the whole thing was an accident caused by a trademark shank. The outcome? His dad ordered Johnson and his Yeovil team mates to stand aside and allow Plymouth - managed by Bobby Williamson no less - to waltz through and equalise through Stevie Crawford. Yeovil went on to win the Carling Cup tie 3-2 after extra time. Johnson junior went on to get the only hat-trick of his career.

His dad won a FIFA Fair Play Award for his selfless act. Nineteen years later and it might not come as a surprise that Johnson has sympathy for Malik Tillman who found himself embroiled in a similar storm as Rangers beat Partick Thistle 3-2 in Sunday’s Scottish Cup clash at Ibrox.

The big difference in this case was that Tillman, having been the victim of the foul, had little idea how the throw-in came to be as he nicked the ball off Kevin Holt before waltzing into the net to put Rangers 2-1 up.

Gers boss Michael Beale has been tipped for a fair play award just like Johnson senior for ordering his players to allow Jags’ Scott Tiffoney a gifted equaliser. But it’s a controversy that’s got the whole of Scottish football talking.

And Hibs boss
