Lee Gregory speaks out on his situation at Sheffield Wednesday amid struggles

Lee Gregory has been a very important player for Sheffield Wednesday this season, but has only managed 25 league starts due to some niggling injuries.

The 33-year-old netted his tenth of the season as the Owls claimed a dramatic late victory over AFC Wimbledon at the weekend and has been crucial to their promotion push under Darren Moore in recent weeks.

Gregory was too eager to return from injury and ended up doing himself more damage in his recovery period, the former Millwall striker explained when he spoke to YorkshireLive.

He said: “If you speak to the medical team, I am probably one of the worst people to have injured because I am always at them saying, ‘listen, I’m going out training’ and they are holding me back.

“It was frustrating but I am back now.

“Hopefully I can stay fit and we can kick on.

“I tried to come back literally a week after the injury and they (the medical team) told me not to.

“That was my fault.

“It gave me a little insight into actually listening to them and letting them deal with it.

“That has gone now and I am back again playing.

“Wednesday won seven of their eight fixtures without Gregory to get their promotion bid back on track.

“Obviously, when you are sitting out and the boys are doing well, it is a good thing to see them doing well but it is the worst thing for a player.

“We were winning three and four nil and I was thinking ‘I want to be playing.’

“The boys did class and thankfully I am back in the team.”

It is nice to see that Gregory still has the hunger for the game at 33 and having dropped to League One after years in the second tier.
