Lee Carsley named England interim boss for Ireland clash

Lee Carsley will take charge of England for their UEFA Nations League clash against the Republic of Ireland in September.

It's been confirmed that the former Boys in Green midfielder will be interim manager for the start of England's Nations League campaign, which starts at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday 7 September.

Carsley will step up to replace Gareth Southgate, who brought his eight years in charge to an end after defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final last month.

He had been linked to the Ireland post after Stephen Kenny's departure, but Carsley elected to stay with the English FA where he has built a strong reputation, having impressively helmed the Under-20s and then Under-21s over the last four years.

The clash in Dublin will also be Heimir Hallgrímsson's first game in charge of Ireland. The Icelandic coach was joint manager when his native country famously shocked England 2-1 at Euro 2016.

A statement from the English FA confirmed Carsley would lead England in the September matches away to Ireland and at home to Finland, but also suggested the 50-year-old could stay in charge throughout the autumn.

"Carsley will step up from his role in charge of the MU21s, initially for September's fixtures away to Republic of Ireland and at home to Finland, but with a view to remaining in the position throughout autumn while the FA's recruitment process for a new permanent head coach continues," an FA statement read.

Carsley added: "It's an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis.

"As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager.
