Forgotten Man United man receives shock England call-up as Harry Maguire returns to squad
Former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes has received his first England call-up. The 23-year-old, who left United in June 2020, has spent the last four years at Lille.
He spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Primeira Liga side Boavista before cementing himself as a first-team regular at Lille. Gomes has since made 117 appearances for the Ligue 1 club and featured three times this season before suffering a serious head injury against Reims on August 17.
Despite this, Gomes has been selected to feature for England ahead of two UEFA Nations League matches against Republic of Ireland and Finland. He has made the squad alongside a number of other uncapped stars, including Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White and Chelsea's Noni Madueke.
Speaking after Gomes was included, England Interim manager Lee Carsley said: "Angel's very technical, controls the game with his skill and technique. Very determined, excellent attitude. Technically and tactically excellent. I think he's a player that people are going to really be excited to see."
Gomes starred in the England side who won the European Under-21 Championships for Carsley in 2023.
