Large police cordon in place in city centre after 'pedestrian hit by bus' - updates

A large police cordon is in place in the city centre this evening. A stretch of Fairfield Street, close to Sackville Gardens and the Gay Village, has been taped off.

An eyewitness said there were four ambulances at the scene as well as police. According to the traffic service Inrix, a bus and a pedestrian have been involved in a collision.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have been contacted for comment but are yet to confirm any details. Fairfield Street is currently closed from the junction with Sackville Street to the junction with the A6 London Road, near Piccadilly station.

Pedestrians are also being blocked and moved away from the area, it is said.

A man who had become trapped underneath a double decker bus after the collision was rescued by fire crews, it has been confirmed.

He was taken to hospital by the ambulance service. His condition is not known at this stage

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) have just issued a statement on the incident. A spokesperson said:

At just after 7pm this evening (Friday 29 November), fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision at Piccadilly Place, Manchester.

Two fire engines from Moss Side Community Fire Station and the technical response unit from Leigh, quickly attended the incident which involved one vehicle.
