Kris Boyd tells Rangers to shut Chris Sutton up on the pitch as Celtic hero admits 'looking forward' to Sky sparring

If you’re expecting on-screen fireworks when Chris Sutton joins Kris Boyd on the Sky airwaves, maybe think again.

There weren’t so much sparks flying as the TV broadcaster’s new punditry duo met up at their Scottish HQ yesterday as high fives and slaps on the back. Well, not quite. But don’t be fooled into thinking Ibrox legend Boyd is going to spend all his time sitting alongside the former Celtic hero in the studio arguing green is blue in the face of evidence to the contrary.

The announcement that Record Sport columnist Sutton was joining Sky’s squad of expert analysts teased the prospect of Scottish football’s two most outspoken voices going head to head on a weekly basis. As Gers’ baiter-in-chief, Sutton has spent the past decade successfully working his way up the noses of everyone at Ibrox while pointing out the Light Blues’ many failings.

There’s been fall-outs with Pedro Caixinha, bans from entering Ibrox and social media rows with “TikTok” Todd Cantwell. It will be Boyd’s job to bite back this season but he wasn’t arguing with his new TV colleague yesterday as he welcomed Sutton on board.

The one season Sutton didn’t have much to say about his former Old Firm opponents was the year Steven Gerrard led Rangers unbeaten to the title and Boyd reckons the best way to hush those barbs is if the Light Blues get back to dominating on the pitch. The fireworks may not yet have started but the Rangers hero hopes Sutton’s valid criticism of his old club puts a rocket up Michael Beale’s squad as they seek to ignite this season’s title challenge ahead of Saturday’s big Premiership kick-off.
