King Charles holds back tears as William pledges oath during emotional coronation ceremony

King Charles looked emotional as the Prince of Wales pledged his oath to the King during the coronation ceremony.

In a break with tradition, Prince William was the only blood prince to pay homage during the service at Westminster Abbey on Saturday.

Kneeling before the King, he said: “I, William, Prince of Wales, pledge my loyalty to you and faith and truth I will bear unto you, as your liege man of life and limb. So help me God.”

He then stood and kissed his father on the right cheek as the King looked on emotionally.

The moment came shortly after St Edward’s Crown was placed on the King’s head to mark the crowning of the ceremony. The 2,300 guests in attendance then stood for the momentous occasion.

Prince WIlliam earlier put the ceremonial Robe of State on the King, which was carried into the venue by Prince George, 9.

At the request of the King and Queen, Prince William and Princess Kate both wore formal robes to the coronation, with the Prince wearing the ceremonial uniform of the Welsh Guards.

The Princess wore a dress by Alexander McQueen, who designed her wedding gown, which featured roses, thistles, daffodils and shamrocks in an ode to the four nations of the United Kingdom.

The historic event marks the first coronation in 70 years. Queen Elizabeth was crowned in 1953 at the age of 27 following the death of her father.

The Coronation is being marked by a number of celebrations, parties and events across Greater Manchester, with venues across the city-region screening the event.
