Key Sheffield Wednesday defender signs new deal as Darren Moore continues Owls squad build

Jack Hunt has signed a new contract extension at Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the 2022/23 season. Hunt’s contract was set to expire this summer, but the 31-year-old defender has decided to remain at the Owls by putting pen-to-paper on a new deal.

Wednesday will be looking to go one better than last season after falling short of promotion back to the Championship in the play-offs, and Hunt’s decision to stay is a signification step to ensuring they do so. He was a key player for the Owls last season after making his return from Bristol City, scoring two goals and providing six assists in 39 League One appearances.

Hunt’s versatility to be able to play both in a back five and back four also make him perfect for Darren Moore, who was not afraid to change his system at different points during the season. The former Huddersfield Town youngster is a fan favourite at Hillsborough, which stems from his previous spell with the club.

He made over 100 appearances for the Owls between 2015 and 2018, twice helping the Owls reach the Championship play-offs, where like last season in League One, they fell just short. Hunt will be hoping its fourth time lucky from a personal perspective, as he looks to finally win a promotion winners medal in the blue and white of the Owls.

Wednesday have already moved quickly to secure the additions of Ben Heneghan and David Stockdale to their squad and will be hoping for more in the coming weeks to avoid repeating the disappointment of last season.
