Key Leicester City star returns to training amid uncertainty over future

Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has returned to training after his extended summer break.

The City captain was not part of Brendan Rodgers' squad for the trip to Evian last week after being allowed extra time off due to his international commitments with Denmark following the end of the season.

Schmeichel, 35, is about to enter his 11th year as the Foxes' number one and that will begin next month in the first game of the season against Brentford. However, the Danish shot-stopper has been the subject of transfer talk this summer after speaking of his desire to play in the Champions League.

The City goalkeeper has one year left on his current deal in LE2 and was linked with a move to Newcastle United earlier in the summer transfer window. However, Eddie Howe opted for an alternative in Nick Pope.

Further doubts of his future at the King Power Stadium were raised toward the end of last season when Rodgers handed Danny Ward a run-out in the 5-1 win at Watford. However, the City boss said ahead of the final game of the season that he did not feel it would be Schmeichel's final appearance for the club.

“I don’t think so,” Rodgers replied when asked last week if the fixture could be Schmeichel’s farewell. “I think he’s very happy here.

“Naturally he’s getting to the age where he can see the finishing line a little bit. In my conversations with him, he’s very happy. He’s got a year to go.

“I think he wants to be here, I think he wants to continue the fight in his career here. Up until now, he’s had a fantastic career.”

“It’s important for him and for us he’s in the best condition he can possibly be in. You’ve seen with Wardy that there’s a challenge there."
