Keane Lewis-Potter forced to wait for England chance as Hull City ace watches convincing win
Keane Lewis-Potter got his first taste of international football on Friday evening, as England’s Under-21s romped to a convincing 4-1 win over plucky Andorra at Bournemouth’s Dean Court, though he was left waiting for a chance to impress.
The 21-year-old Hull City ace was an unused substitute as Lee Carsley’s men took a big step towards qualification for next year’s European Championship’s, thanks to goals from Folarin Balogun, Jacob Ramsey, Morgan Gibbs-White and substitute Anthony Gordon.
Lewis-Potter, who had teammates Jacob Greaves, Brandon Fleming and Billy Chadwick watching on from the stands as well as his family and friends, was given a first-hand glimpse of the quality at England’s disposal, and what stands in his way, but the experience gained from being a part of the set-up is one which has surely whetted his appetite for more.
A flurry of early chances eventually paid dividends for the hosts, who opened the scoring five minutes in against a hapless Andorra, as Folarin Balogun at the near post with a poacher’s finish from a Livramento cross.
Chances continued to flow for a vibrant England side with Noni Madueke and Balogun going close, while Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott was tormenting Adrian Gomes down the right flank, but despite his best efforts, he couldn’t get his range finder in tune.
After Gomes executed some type of spear on Elliott, he was withdrawn on a booking with defender Joan Bellido coming on in his place, and as Gomes retreated to the bench, his sense of relief at getting an early exemption was obvious.
England continued to probe, to create chances and to be fouled in and around the penalty box, though in what was an at-times extraordinary performance from Luxembourg-based referee Jasmin Sabotic,
