Julian Alvarez's six goals show how Man City can use him with and without Erling Haaland

Almost overnight, from getting excited about the first glimpses of Erling Haaland wandering around the City Football Academy, Manchester City fans have switched to wondering how he will get into the team! That is not a case of buying into the theory that 6ft 4in Haaland is not suited to Pep Guardiola’s style of football, a notion on which the manager himself has poured scorn.

It is all down to the fact that the other striker who will be arriving at the Etihad Stadium this summer, and whose signature has been overshadowed by the impressive figure of the Norwegian hitman, did something that even goal machine Haaland has not yet managed - hitting six goals in a game.

The 22-year-old City new boy, who has remained at River Plate after signing for the Blues in January, technically on loan, performed the feat with a hat-trick in each half of an 8-1 thrashing of Peruvian champions Alianza Lima in a group game of the Copa Libertadores, South America's version of the Champions League. Haaland’s best at senior level has been four in a game - although he is playing at a better level in the Bundesliga.

The fact is that City, for around half the money they might have expected to shell out had Harry Kane been able to prise himself free of Spurs, have landed two of the most promising young strikers in world football - Haaland is 21 and Alvarez 22. The release clause they had to pay Borussia Dortmund meant they landed him for £51million, while they have already paid £4m to River for Argentina international Alvarez with another £10.8m due by next summer.
