Man City fans split on next transfer target after Erling Haaland arrival

Manchester City supporters are divided on whether it is more important to improve their midfield or defence ahead of next season.

For many it was obvious that the Premier League champions needed a world-class centre forward in their ranks. It arguably cost them a place in the Champions League final and almost saw them lose their grip on the title.

Erling Haaland’s arrival had been imminent for a number of weeks, as had Julian Alvarez’s, so City fans have been looking at what other areas need bolstering. Just under 1,600 voted in a Manchester Evening News poll to cast their verdict on the matter.

A little over 46 per cent of fans said the defence needs reinforcing. Pep Guardiola was left stretched at the back towards the end of the season amid a host of backline injuries.

Fernandinho was forced to play centre-half for a number of important fixtures with nearly every defender sidelined at some point throughout the season. Meanwhile, 28 per cent believed it is midfield that should get the most focus.

A replacement for Fernandinho is needed this summer while Bernardo Silva is being linked with a move to Barcelona after nearly leaving the Etihad last year. Current Nou Camp star Ferran Torres was never directly replaced either.

Just under four per cent said the goalkeeping roster needs bolstering. Ederson shared the golden glove with countryman Alisson Becker of Liverpool this season.

However, many are not satisfied with City’s back-up goalkeepers. Zack Steffen was ridiculed after his howler in the 3-2 FA Cup semi-final defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Scott Carson is the club’s current third choice and some wish to see Guardiola strengthen
