Journalist says there's "still a big question" over Wolves colossus despite recent results

Wolverhampton Wanderers need to get star striker Raul Jimenez ‘scoring again’, according to journalist Paul Brown.

The Midlands outfit are enjoying a successful season so far under the tutelage of Bruno Lage, yet their fortunes could improve even further if they manage to find the back of the net on a more regular basis.

Wolves are currently sitting pretty in seventh position in the Premier League table, just six points behind Manchester United, who occupy the final Champions League qualification spot.

However, Lage’s charges have two games in hand over the Red Devils, meaning a top-four finish is a realistic possibility for them.

And it’s easy to see where most of Wolves’ success has come from. In their 24 top-flight fixtures to date, they have conceded just 18 goals, with only league leaders Manchester City boasting a better defensive record.

But Lage is yet to strike a balance between defence and attack since replacing compatriot Nuno Espirito Santo last summer.

In contrast, the Molineux outfit have scored just 23 times while on league duty throughout 2021/22 – the third-worst attacking record in the division, bettering only Norwich City and Burnley’s miserly tallies.

The lack of a prolific goalscorer has significantly hindered Wolves this season, with Jimenez their joint-leading marksman despite only bagging five goals in all competitions.

It’s a sharp contrast from his impressive tally of 27 strikes and 10 assists in 2019/20 when Wolves finished seventh and reached the FA Cup semi-final, but a fractured skull picked up against Arsenal last term is perhaps to blame for his drop-off in form.
