Jose Mourinho's Tammy Abraham promise can help Manchester United solve transfer problem

Manchester United need striking reinforcements in the summer. With the guaranteed departure of Edinson Cavani when his contract expires and Anthony Martial's potential departure, Cristiano Ronaldo will be left as the only true striker at the club.

The Manchester Evening News understands that United are interested in signing a young striker in the summer transfer window to play alongside Ronaldo and become the club's main striker when the Portuguese forward leaves the club. But it is not as simple as just signing a forward with potential; Erik ten Hag needs a number nine who can link up the play and also act as a poacher in the box.

And a player who has thrived in that role this season is Tammy Abraham. The English forward joined Roma from Chelsea in the summer and under former United manager Jose Mourinho he has grown into one of Europe's most exciting attacking players.

Abraham has scored 24 goals in 49 appearances so far this season and his goals in the UEFA Conference League have propelled Roma into the final where they will face Feyenoord. And Mourinho has been full of praise for the forward.

Mourinho told Sky Sports: “Against Leicester he was absolutely amazing and at this moment I joke and say 'I refuse to praise him' because he can always do better. He knows how happy I am. He knows how much I love the kid and the player and I'm proud of what we are doing and I'm so happy for Tammy.
