Jonny Evans makes David de Gea point amid Andre Onana Manchester United criticism

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has offered David de Gea's difficult stints at Old Trafford as reassurance to Andre Onana following criticism of his recent performances.

Onana's start with the Reds has been mixed to say the least. While it is generally accepted the Cameroonian's distribution is much better than his predecessor, the former Inter man has fallen victim to a few crucial errors during his time as United's No.1.

His most recent error came in midweek when he let Leroy Sane's strike squirm between his hands to give Bayern Munich the lead in the Champions League. The mistake led some to suggest United had not upgraded on their 'keeper from last year.

After the match in Germany, Onana requested an interview with the media and took responsibility for the result. Reflecting on his teammate's decision to do this, Evans commended the shot stopper.

"It’s a big thing for him to do that," the centre back told TNT Sports. "He didn't have to do that. But I think it's very difficult for any player coming to a new club to hit the ground running and maybe he’s been a bit harsh on himself. I've seen that quite a lot and I've experienced that myself.

"He's replacing David de Gea, who was here for a long time. Again, remember, David at the start of his career at Manchester United, maybe went through a bit of a tough time to settle in and we saw what sort of career he would go on to have for this club."
