Johnny Marr reacts with fury to The Smiths being played at Donald Trump rally

Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr has reacted with fury to the band's music being played at a Donald Trump rally.

It came after a user on X - formerly Twitter - posted about one of the Mancunian indie rockers' songs being played shortly before the former US president took to the stage at an event in New Hampshire.

In response, another user shared footage from a Trump rally in South Dakota last August with the caption: “You actually hear the Smiths more often than you’d think at 2024 Trump rallies”.

In the video, “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” can be heard playing over a public address system.

Responding to the video, Marr said: “Ahh…right…OK. I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this s*** shut right down right now.”

It is not the first time that Marr has fallen out with politicians. In 2010, he told the then-Prime Minister David Cameron to "stop saying" he is a fan of the Smiths.

Mr Cameron had spoken several times of his love of the band and picked their track, This Charming Man, when he appeared on Desert Island Discs.

He also posed for a picture in front of Salford Lads Club on a visit to Manchester, recreating the famous image from the band's 1986 album The Queen is Dead.

Marr, whose jangly guitar style was central to the band's distinctive sound, tweeted: "David Cameron, stop saying that you like The Smiths, no you don't. I forbid you to like it."
