John Bennett 'to resign as Rangers chairman' as Ibrox crisis deepens with supremo heading for the exit door

John Bennett has reportedly told Rangers that he plans to step down from his role as chairman.

The 61-year-old stepped into the top role at Ibrox in March 2023 from his role as vice-chairman as he took over from outgoing Douglas Park - but The Athletic reports suggest he is set to "step away" after due to the demands of the role and the toll it has taken on him. It is noted that there is no "immediate" plan to name his successor.

Lifelong fan Bennett invested in the club and was first appointed to the Ibrox board in 2015 - he was then made deputy chairman in 2020 serving under Park - but it has been a rocky period for the club. Following his appointment as chairman, Bennett promised Rangers fans in September 2022 that the club would strive to be the ‘best in class’ on and off the pitch under his stewardship but have struggled to meet those standards in recent months.

A summer overhaul of the first-team squad and a delay in construction work at Ibrox - followed by a move to Hampden Park - ramped up the pressure on the board. He was forced to apologise to supports for the move away from Govan in July while also admitting his disgust at the "unsustainable" transfer model at the club amid their search for a "mythical" player trading model.

The club have also been left without a CEO after the departure of James Bisgrove for the Saudi Pro League. During the time of his involvement, Bennett has seen Rangers have win one Premiership title, one Scottish Cup, one League Cup and reached the 2022 Europa League final.
