Joe Greenwood's reveals why he cried as he discusses Huddersfield Giants future

Joe Greenwood cried after losing the Challenge Cup final - but might have tears of joy if he secures a new Huddersfield Giants deal. The ex-England second-row was heartbroken after the West Yorkshire club’s cup final defeat to one of his former employers Wigan Warriors.

He helped them bounce back with an impressive win in Perpignan on Saturday and hopes to double up against Leeds Rhinos tomorrow. Greenwood, 29, joined Huddersfield from Wigan on a two-year deal at the end of 2020.

He has switched to a ball-playing prop role under head coach Ian Watson and thrived but is out of contract at the end of the season. The ex-St Helens and Gold Coast Titans forward, though, knows the strides Giants are making and he wants to stay.

“I’m just negotiating at the moment,” said Greenwood. “Hopefully I’ll definitely get something sorted as I really want to stay up here.

“Fingers crossed we can come to some agreement and stay at Huddersfield and carry on as I do love it. Watto’s brought me along and the way he plays and his gameplan suits me really well. I’ve changed position into the middle from back-row and I'm really enjoying rugby under him.

“He’s a really good coach and mentor as well. I like to call him a good friend. “He can get the best out of people by speaking to different people in different ways. His man-management is great. I’m really enjoying it and they say if you enjoy it you get the best out of your rugby so hopefully I stay with Giants. Hopefuly Watto stays around for the next few years as well as the way he’s coaching anyone will want to grab him!”
