Jay Slater's body found in treacherous ravine holding secret that could have proved deadly

Located just a mile from the last known signal of his mobile phone, which pinged a nearby tower, the area is notorious for its challenging hiking conditions. Flanked by towering cliffs on either side of the valley, it offers an alluring view of the oceana potential factor that locals speculate might have drawn 19-year-old Jay, who had messaged a friend about being severely lost, towards it.

Fresh images reveal the dangerous terrain of the gorge where it is thought that Jay Slater met his tragic end. The pressing question that lingers is why Jay ventured into such a treacherous area to begin with, posits local resident Helena Gomes, aged 35.

Despite the risks, she notes that the area's natural beauty continues to attract visitors.

Helena commented: "You see how bad it is, we don't even walk there, so if someone gets into trouble it is going to be hard for anyone to find the body. No one is surprised it took so long, why he was there is a mystery, he should never have been going that way, maybe he saw the ocean and thought it was the best way. We just feel so bad for his family but are so proud of the searchers who found him, they never gave up."

A team from The Mirror set out to follow the route Jay may have taken from the Airbnb he was staying at in the nearby village of Masca. The journey to the ravine's brink alone took over an hour.
