Jamie Paterson signs Swansea City contract extension as Russell Martin makes exciting admission

Jamie Paterson has extended his contract with Swansea City until the summer of 2024.

The attacker excelled in the opening half of the 2021/22 campaign under Russell Martin but missed several weeks of action following the festive period after admitting he was not in the right frame of mind to play amid a contract dispute with the club's owners.

However, he returned to action and played a key role in Swansea's improved run of results in the second half of their debut campaign under head coach Martin.

The Swans held the option to extend his original deal - which was due to expire this summer - by 12 months. And after triggering that initial clause, they have handed the ex-Bristol City playmaker an additional year on his contract as a result of his impressive displays.

“I think it’s a really big signing for us - it almost feels like a new signing,” said head coach Martin. “I think he deserves it, it’s a reward for his willingness to take onboard new ideas. He’s really important in the dressing room in terms of his character, and the energy he has.

“[He knows] he’s going to be part of the plan over the next couple of years which will be important for him because when he feels comfortable and has a sense of belonging, he plays his best football.

“I think we’ll see the best of him and I’m really excited about it."

Paterson netted nine times and registered nine assists during his first campaign at the Swansea.com Stadium. His extension comes following a hectic period for the club who have appointed Andy Parslow as their new set-piece coach.
