Jamie Carragher warns Manchester United that they could fall into familiar trap with Erik ten Hag

Jamie Carragher has warned Manchester United that they could fall into a familiar trap with Erik ten Hag as they have done with previous managers.

It was a transfer window of contrasts for Ten Hag at Old Trafford. The Dutchman was backed with the arrivals of six new signings; Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Antony and Martin Dubravka.

However, his main target this window, Frenkie de Jong refused to leave Barcelona and have since found that Eriksen is more than capable of playing in a De Jong-type role. By deadline day most United fans were at least somewhat satisfied with the business done.

Liverpool legend Carragher though believes that the move to back Ten Hag could backfire like it has done with other managers. Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate Xtra, in partnership with Sky Bet, he explained: "It’s actually been a problem for Manchester United where they’ve backed the manager too much.

"David Moyes brought in Marouane Fellaini from Everton, Jose Mourinho went and got Nemanja Matic from Chelsea. The biggest problem at Manchester United is the fact they’ve allowed managers to do what they want.

"Jose Mourinho, people say never got backed. He brought in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, bought Paul Pogba for £90m which is worth about £130m now.

"This idea that Manchester United managers aren’t backed is nonsense. That’s been their biggest problem."

Despite a shaky opening couple of matches, Ten Hag's investments seem to have improved United's form. The Reds go into Thursday's Europa League tie with Real Sociedad on the back of four straight victories.
