Jamie Carragher says Fikayo Tomori red card ‘feels harsh’ in AC Milan vs Chelsea match

Jamie Carragher says the red card shown to AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori in their Champions League match against Chelsea ‘feels harsh’.

Chelsea news, exclusives and analysis

Tomori was sent off after just 18 minutes after he appeared to tug Mason Mount on the shoulder inside the box, with the Chelsea midfielder staying on his feet.

England international Tomori and his AC Milan team-mates were shell-shocked by the decision and swarmed around German referee Daniel Siebert to convince him to change his mind, but his call stood as he awarded Chelsea a penalty.

Jorginho slotted home the spot kick to give Graham Potter’s side a 1-0 lead at the San Siro and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doubled the lead after 34 minutes.

‘The red card for Tomori feels harsh,’ Carragher posted in a now deleted tweet on Tuesday night.

‘But what happened to double jeopardy? Could it not just be a penalty and no red card [shrugging emoji].’

Tomori, who joined AC Milan from Chelsea just last year, had spoken in the build up to the match about how the Italian champions’ defeat to the Blues last week at Stamford Bridge in the reverse fixture had left him ‘angry’.

‘After the match against Chelsea I was angry and I wanted to give everything on the pitch,’ the 24-year-old said.

‘I wanted to cancel the performance against Chelsea and I expressed how I felt. Every game I try to give my best.

‘Last week I know I didn’t do that and that was really disappointing for me. In football you rarely get another chance to put it right.
