Jamie Carragher names Newcastle player who would be ‘absolutely fantastic for Manchester United’

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak would be perfect for Manchester United.

The 23-year-old Swede is starting to find his form at St James' Park after he suffered a long-term hamstring injury just three games into his career in the North East. Isak would make a goalscoring return to the starting line-up in January against Fulham and since then has scored three goals for Eddie Howe's side.

Despite not finding the back of the net against United, Carragher believes that Isak would have been suited to playing for the Reds had he ended up at Old Trafford last summer. He told Sky Sports: "I love him, I love watching him play.

"I mean, Manchester United need a centre-forward, you look at him and I think he would be absolutely fantastic for Man United. They could have got him at the start of the season.

"When I first saw him at Anfield, I think it was his first appearance, he looked outstanding." It is no secret that Erik ten Hag's main target in the summer will be a striker.

United have been relying on Wout Weghorst since January after Cristiano Ronaldo parted ways with the Reds in November following his incendiary interview with Piers Morgan. While Ten Hag insisted that he has been pleased with Weghorst's contributions, there is a clear acceptance that the team needs more goals.

MEN Sport understands that Tottenham Hotspur captain Harry Kane is the Reds' number one target in the summer. However, should Ten Hag run into difficulty signing England's all-time leading goalscorer, Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund, Napoli's Victor Osimhen and Eintracht Frankfurt's Randal Kolo Muani are all being tracked as alternatives.
