Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville pictured in Arsenal shirt as Premier League promise made

Gary Neville was put on the spot on Friday evening when Jamie Carragher pulled out an old picture of him in an Arsenal shirt. The pair were on punditry duties for the dramatic 3-3 draw between the Gunners and Southampton at the Emirates, with Carragher patrolling the ground beforehand to spot some vintage shirts.

The former Liverpool man found a fan with a version of Arsenal's green 1982 away jersey before switching to a picture of Neville and his brother, Phil, sporting the same shirt as kids.

"We were a very poor team and we just got some kit,” Neville told Sky Sports. “The local Intersport in Bury gave us some Arsenal shirts that hadn’t sold from the year before."

The ex-Manchester United captain was then handed a fresh version of the shirt for him to wear, something he has promised to do if they win the Premier League.

Arsenal are currently five points clear at the top of the league but have played two more games than Manchester City. The pair meet at the Etihad on Wednesday.

Neville admitted that he hopes for Arsenal to pip City to the title and ends their chances of matching United's 1999 treble-winning season.

"I don’t want Manchester City to win the treble, obviously, so for me Arsenal have got the best chance of stopping them I think," Neville said before Arsenal's draw. "Arsenal would be unbelievable to go from fifth to first, but my feeling all the way through was that I always looked at this period of games and thought that’s gonna be really tough, I’m not sure they’re gonna get through it."
