James Tavernier wants Rangers to silence false start critics with Servette response after 'unacceptable' opening day

Rangers skipper James Tavernier has urged the under-fire Ibrox squad to silence their Killie critics with a £4.3million Euro bonus.

Gers suffered a nightmare Premiership opening night as they kicked-off the new campaign with a deflating defeat to Derek McInnes side. But Michael Beale’s side have no time to dwell on their ropey Rugby Park show with Swiss side Servette due in town on Wednesday night for their first Champions League qualifier.

The winner of the two-legged tie will land not only a play-off shot against either PSV Eindhoven or Sturm Graz for a place in the group stage but also a bumper £4.3million UEFA pay day. And the captain would love nothing more than to shove that huge cheque down the throats of those who have questioned Rangers since Saturday’s shock loss in Ayrshire. He said: “It was the first game of the season. It’s obviously disappointing not to get a result and the three points that we all wanted.

“But it’s the first game of the season and we’ve got a very important game round the corner on Wednesday which is the perfect way to answer our performance and rectify what we need to do. It’s about moving forward and making sure this doesn’t happen again. It’s going to be a different game. It’s at home to a European team and obviously European teams play differently to teams in our league.

“But I know as a team what we’ve worked on during pre-season and the boys will answer straight back. We’ll be looking forward to it. Obviously Saturday really hurt - and it should. But we can’t dwell on it too much and we have to move forward.”
